Liberal State Senator Steve Sweeney was New Jersey’s longest-tenured politician until Wednesday, when truck driver Edward Durr beat him in his district’s election. Durr was a total unknown prior to running.
Sweeney, on the other hand, is a 20-year veteran of the New Jersey State Senate, serving as the body’s President currently. He is considered by many as the most powerful politician in the entire state.
To make the story even more intriguing, Durr’s campaign used just $153 in the Republican primary… and $67 of it was spent at Dunkin’ Donuts! He used about $5,000 throughout the full campaign. (updated after Durr told Fox News his campaign used $5K in total)

The night of the election, Durr went to sleep with a 2,000 vote lead and a decent feeling about his chances. Now, he is strongly projected to win the seat.

Durr’s story truly is proof that every day Americans CAN and SHOULD run for office, especially at the state level. His success against all odds should convince plenty of other Americans to consider it.
