Michigan’s Attorney General, Dana Nessel, agreed to investigate 2020 election fraud claims upon the recommendation of the Republican-led state Senate Oversight Committee.

During the 2020 election, voting discrepancies were brought up in Antrim County after a human and computer error skewed election results in favor of Joe Biden. From these errors came accusations of possible voter fraud.

Their report urged the AG to consider investigating people who may have profited off the spreading of information about the possibility of election fraud in Antrim County. There is no indication of who the targets are or what the scope of this probe is, but the report insisted the AG will look into people who promoted election fraud claims for their personal gain.

The Attorney Generals’ press secretary, Lynsey Mukomel, confirmed to Law&Crime that the probe came from state Senator Ed McBroom (R) and stated that the Michigan Police Department is aiding in the investigation. After almost eight months, the Oversight Committee did find minor weaknesses in the states voting system, but nothing indicating large scale voting fraud, and in the report, McBroom stated that he felt “confident to assert the results of the Michigan election are accurately represented by the certified and audited results.”

While this report didn’t name who might be investigated, it did show a considerable amount of time was spent debunking claims by Attorney Matthew DePerno and former state Senator Patrick Colbeck who led pro-Trump efforts in discrediting the 2020 election.

DePerno and Colbeck have answered this investigation with accusations that the committee is attempting to infringe on their constitutional right to free speech.

McBroom replied, stating, “No one has free speech if they’re committing a crime, and committing fraud is a crime.”

The investigation will serve to prove or disprove McBroom’s accusations of criminal activity on the part of DePerno and Colbeck. It could also shed light on other supposed fraudulent activities regarding the 2020 election controversy.
