Earlier this week, La Jolla Country Day Head of School Gary Krahn sent an email to parents regarding Make America Great Again hats, which a student wore on campus.
The email says, “We also had a student wear a MAGA Hat today. I have talked with that student who now understands why that hat is offensive to our community. He will not wear it again.”
When asked about why the student had to take off the hat, Krahn commented “It wasn’t a political decision to reach out to him and talk about that hat, it was a decision about dignity.” Krahn went on to call the MAGA hat “dangerous” and a “symbol of racism and hatred.” Krahn also refused to comment when asked if Biden-Harris apparel would be allowed on campus.
Based on La Jolla Country Day’s student handbook, the MAGA hat should be permitted; according to the handbook, “School does not allow hats in the classroom, but on campus is permitted.”
There are also no rules against wearing political symbols in the student handbook.
