According to a poll conducted by The Heartland Institute, 37% of Americans ages 18-39 believe the government should ban “some speech.” In 40-64-year-olds, the number is 23%, and in people over the age of 65, it is less than 20%.
The Heartland Institute’s poll expresses an extremely dangerous precedent that is happening in America, which is our dismissal of the First Amendment. Within this weekend alone, President Trump has been banned on Facebook, Twitter, Gmail, Instagram, Spotify, Snapchat, Shopify, Reddit, Twitch, Youtube, Tik Tok, and Pinterest.
Moreover, the alternative social media platform Parler has been banned from the Apple and Google app stores. Amazon has also announced they are suspending Parler indefinitely.
The Democratic Party is calling for cable companies such as DirectTV and Spectrum to ban conservative-leaning news stations such as Fox News, OAN, and Newsmax. If these trends continue, the internet will no longer be a free forum for ideas, but instead an echo chamber of one-party rule.
