Samaritan’s Purse is a Christian organization that has been treating coronavirus patients. This charity group sets up emergency hospitals and has been active in New York City, one of the largest hotbeds for the virus. Now, leftists in the city are kicking out Samaritan’s Purse in the name of social justice. As of May 4, Samaritan’s Purse is beginning to close down its hospital in New York City.
A Christian organization led by Franklin Graham, Samaritan’s Purse believes marriage is between a man and a woman and that God decides one’s gender at birth. Leftists in New York did not take kindly to the group for having these beliefs. Back in April, Mayor Bill de Blasio said he would closely monitor the group to prevent discrimination against LGBT people. While Samaritan’s Purse was active in New York, it did not engage in ‘discrimination’ but instead provided “high-quality medical care for 315 patients infected with the virus” according to the Mount Sinai Health System. It did not make LGBT issues a focus of its work, but protesters condemned the group, even comparing it to the Ku Klux Klan. NYC Council Speaker Corey Johnson said: “It is time for Samaritan’s Purse to leave NYC. This group, led by the notoriously bigoted, hate-spewing Franklin Graham, came at a time when our city couldn’t in good conscience turn away any offer of help. That time has passed. Their continued presence here is an affront to our values of inclusion, and is painful for all New Yorkers who care deeply about the LGBTQ community.” There are in fact no confirmed instances of Samaritan’s Purse refusing to treat LGBT patients. Franklin Graham has said the group would treat any person who was sick. Leftists such as Corey Johnson are simply attacking Samaritan’s Purse for the thought crime of opposing homosexuality. Although it is good news that the city does not require as much medical help as it did last month, there is not any legitimate harm in letting the group stay. It is not actively harming anyone, despite what the Democrats may claim. Kicking out a medical group for a difference in opinion is a petty move, and most Americans would probably disagree with it. It is the social justice politicians who engage in such practices, and can get away with it in states such as New York and California.
The situation with Samaritan’s Purse is not tolerance, but in fact severe intolerance. Leftists are attacking heroic medical workers for simply believing Christian doctrine. They appear to believe in the social justice ideology so strongly that they would take away legitimate medical care to uphold it.
