Late last week, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s office announced that Paul Pelosi, Nancy’s husband, had been attacked in a violent home break-in. But as the weekend progressed, more facts started to roll in and theories about what actually happened began to circulate.
Rogue Review wants to be crystal clear on the distinction between facts and speculation. As such, we have given a timeline below and facts pertinent to the case.
- Pelosi’s spokesperson Drew Hammill said in a statement, “Early this morning, an assailant broke into the Pelosi residence in San Francisco and violently assaulted Mr. Pelosi…The assailant is in custody and the motivation for the attack is under investigation. Mr. Pelosi was taken to the hospital, where he is receiving excellent medical care and is expected to make a full recovery,”
- Nancy Pelosi was not in San Francisco at the time of the attack.
- Alleged attacker David DePape has been charged with attempted homicide, assault with a deadly weapon, elder abuse, burglary and “several other additional felonies,” per San Francisco Police Chief William Scott.
- Chief Scott gave details on the attack in a news conference, “[DePape] pulled the hammer away from Mr. Pelosi and violently assaulted him with it… [officers] immediately tackled [DePape], disarmed him, took him into custody, requested emergency backup and rendered medical aid.”
- Both Pelosi and DePape were transferred to a local hospital.
- Pelosi had surgery on his skull Friday and is expected to make a full recovery.
What we know
DePape was “hemp jeweler” and familiar to the San Francisco nudist community
DePape was described in a 2013 article as a “hemp jewelry maker”. The original story was done by SF Gate on a nudist wedding for activist Gypsy Taud, in which DePape was the best man.

Both Paul Pelosi and David DePape were holding hammers

Mainstream media says DePape is right-wing, but DePape’s neighbors say he’s left-wing
The mainstream media and left-wing politicians alluded to the speculation that DePape is essentially a right-wing radical. Heavy.com said DePape was into “anti-government” beliefs, “COVID and election conspiracy theories online” and that DePape “made posts about QAnon”.
Hillary Clinton said over the weekend, “The Republican Party and its mouthpieces now regularly spread hate and deranged conspiracy theories. It is shocking, but not surprising, that violence is the result. As citizens, we must hold them accountable for their words and the actions that follow.”
Rep. Ilhan Omar said in a Tweet that DePape is a “far right white nationalist” who tried to “assassinate the Speaker of the House and almost killed her husband a year after violent insurrectionists tried to find her and kill her in the Capitol, and the Republican Party’s response is to either ignore it or belittle it.”
According to an NY Post opinion piece posted to Substack by Michael Shellenberger, he said, “DePape lived with a notorious local nudist in a Berkeley home, complete with a Black Lives Matter sign in the window and an LGBT rainbow flag, emblazoned with a marijuana symbol, hanging from a tree”.
DePapes neighbors described him, “What I know about the family is that they’re very radical activists. They seem very left. They are all about the Black Lives Matter movement. Gay pride. But they’re very detached from reality. They have called the cops on several of the neighbors, including us, claiming that we are plotting against them. It’s really weird to see that they are willing to be so aggressive toward somebody else who is also a lefty.”
Paul Pelosi described David as a “friend” in the 911 call
Dispatch audio was released from Pelosi’s 911 call soon after the incident. According to the dispatcher, the “RP” or “reporting party” (in this case, Pelosi) said that while he doesn’t know the male in the home, he said his “name is David and that he is a friend”.
Partial audio transcript: “RP [reporting party] stated that there is a male in the home and that he’s going to wait for his wife, RP stated that he doesn’t know who the male is but he advised that his name is David and that he is a friend. RP sounded somewhat confused.”
DePape allegedly ran a blog called “Welcome to Big Brothers Censorship Hell”
David DePape’s name is tied to a conspiracy blog called “Big Brother Censorshop Hell”. Bizarre language is used on the website, with sloppy graphics and writing.
DePape cannot be positively identified as the author of this blog. The New York Post shines light on this “While it is unclear if DePape — who has been described as living in storage units — himself authored these blogs, relatives and acquaintances confirmed to CNN that he frequently shared conspiracies on Facebook and seemed “out of touch with reality.”
There are many more theories revolving around what happened at the Pelosi home last week. Many can be seen while perusing social media.
