Millions of Americans are gearing up for what will be the most unorthodox Thanksgiving in U.S history. Most citizens believe Thanksgiving should be a day of thanks and remembrance, but Teen Vogue’s Kim Kelly suggested that Thanksgiving should be cancelled.
In a tweet Monday, Kelly wrote, “Cancel Thanksgiving forever, who cares. Garbage fake holiday. Next year, just plan a nice autumn dinner with your family and/or friends. Eat whatever you want. We don’t need a whole day devoted to celebrating genocide and dry poultry.”
Kelly’s followers seemed to agree. One of her followers commented, “Why we gotta inject the white mythos into everything.” Another radical chimed in, saying Thanksgiving was a “toast to genocide.”
FACT CHECK: Abraham Lincoln did not establish Thanksgiving to “toast genocide” but as a way to celebrate the United States’ unique cultural unity. To Lincoln, the best example of this unity occurred when 53 Pilgrims celebrated their first harvest in the New World with 90 of their Native American neighbors.
