A laboratory at the University of Florida has recently analyzed a small sample of face masks and revealed the existence of 11 pathogens that includes bacteria causing diphtheria, pneumonia, and meningitis.

A group of Gainesville, FL parents concerned about the effects on their children wearing face masks all day at school in 90 °F weather sent six masks, five of which were worn by children ages 6 to 11 for five to eight hours of school, and one adult, to be analyzed for contaminants at the University of Florida’s Mass Spectrometry Research and Education Center (The Epoch Times).

According to Rational Ground, five of the six face masks were contaminated with parasites, fungi and bacteria. One mask was found to contain a virus that causes a fatal systemic disease in cattle and deer.

Other pathogens that cause ulcers, acne and strep throat were detected as well. Of the six face masks, three were surgical, two were cotton and one poly gaiter. The controls for the study include unused face masks and a t-shirt worn at school. Amanda Donoho, one of the parents from the group of children’s’ face masks tested, interviewed with Fox News: Fox & Friends on June 17 and explained how her sons came home from school with rashes around their nose and mouth. She explained the school’s policy where her sons “are in masks all day, seven hours a day—the only break they get is to eat or drink” (Fox News).

This began the investigation into pathogens found on the masks. Donoho also stated students do not have to wear a mask outside at school since April 2021. However, face masks are required when they are within six to eight feet of each other. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends continued use of face masks and social distancing in schools after issuing new guidance in May stating vaccinated people do not need to wear face masks.

RONDEAU: Why I Won’t Compromise on the First Amendment for DeSantis

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed an executive order on May 3rd suspending COVID-19 restrictions, which includes face masks. Some school districts, like that of Alachua County Public Schools (ACPS) of Gainesville, FL, chose to keep their mask policy in place for the rest of the school year. ACPS will keep their mask policy non-compulsory for the 2021-2022 school year.

Students and children may elect to wear a mask if desired. However, school buses will require face masks until mid-September unless there are changes to federal transportation regulation guidelines (The Epoch Times).
