Former President Donald J. Trump said he is “very, very, very probably” going to run for president a second time in 2024.
At a rally event in Sioux City, Iowa, the 45th president stood in front of an audience wearing green “Farmers for Trump” hats and strongly hinted at a future run.
“..and did much better the second time than I did the first. Getting millions more votes in 2020 than I got in 2016 and likewise, getting more votes than any sitting president by far. And now, in order to make our country successful, and safe, and glorious, I will very, very, very probably do it again, OK? Very very very probably. Get ready, that’s all I’m telling you. Get ready.”
Trump has hinted at a second run all the way back to 2021, when three people Trump was dining with leaked to Rolling Stone that he plans to run in 2024.
It was reported as his “current plan”, with the caveat that plans could change in the future. An official stated at the time of the leak, “We’ve still got three years to go. But he’s telling people that.”
One question that has yet to be answered is whether Trump will face a serious challenger for the nomination. Some have speculated that Florida Governor Ron DeSantis may challenge Trump for the nomination.
The most recent news in the DeSantis circle shows the governor is planning to NOT run in 2024 – assuming Trump takes the expected route of going for the nomination. In a recent report from the Political Insider, the site says they have four “prominent Republican” sources saying DeSantis is “…‘reconsidering’ plans to launch a presidential campaign in 2024.” This move was communicated to DeSantis donors, according to Gabriel Sherman of Vanity Fair.
The betting markets have had both Trump and DeSantis leading at different times the last seven months. On May 1st of 2022, Trump held a 6-point lead over the Florida governor. Then in early September of 2022, DeSantis led Trump by 4 points in the market. After the rally in Iowa, Trump leads by 5 points over DeSantis.

According to Axios reporter Jonathan Swan, Trump’s inner circle may be planning to launch the 2024 campaign on November 14th.
